3-2 Zone

Learn the fundamentals of the 3-2 zone defense with corner traps. This defensive scheme positions three players at the top and two players in the low post, with aggressive trapping in the corners to force turnovers and difficult shots.

Instructions

  1. 1Set up in a 3-2 zone formation - three players at the top of the key, two players in the low post
  2. 2The top three players defend the perimeter and prevent penetration
  3. 3The two low players protect the paint and help on drives
  4. 4When the ball enters the corner, execute a trap with the nearest top defender and low defender
  5. 5The other defenders rotate to cover open players and passing lanes
  6. 6Force the offense to make difficult passes or take contested shots
  7. 7Practice rotating and recovering after the trap
  8. 8Work on communication between all five defenders

Pro Tips

  • Maintain proper spacing in the 3-2 formation - don't collapse too much
  • The top three defenders must move as a unit and communicate constantly
  • When trapping in the corner, both defenders should be aggressive and active
  • The other three defenders must rotate quickly to cover open players
  • Keep your hands up to disrupt passing lanes
  • Force the offense toward the sideline and baseline when possible
  • Recover quickly after the trap to prevent easy baskets
  • Communication is essential - call out screens, cuts, and rotations
