4 Out Pest Twister
A 4-out, 1-in set that chains two screening actions. The post lifts out to set back-to-back ball screens for the guard - the pest - and then the two twist: the guard turns and immediately screens for the screener. As the ball reverses to the wing, the post dives into the paint to finish. Elsewhere these are usually called a repeat ball screen and a screen-the-screener.
Instructions
- 1Set up 4 out, 1 in: the guard at the top, a player on each wing, one in the corner, and the post on the block
- 2Pest: the post lifts out of the high post and sets a ball screen at the top of the key
- 3If the defense takes the first screen away, the post re-screens immediately - back to back, as many times as it takes to get the guard downhill
- 4Twister: coming off the screen, the guard turns and immediately screens for the post
- 5The post uses that screen to shake their own defender at the top
- 6Reverse the ball to the wing as the twist clears
- 7The post dives straight down the middle, sealing their defender, and the wing feeds them for the finish
- 8The corner and weak-side players hold their spacing so the lane stays open for the dive
Pro Tips
- The pest only works if the re-screen is immediate - any pause lets the defense reset and the second screen is wasted
- The screener's defender is the one who relaxes after the first screen, and that is exactly who the twist is built to catch
- On the twist, both players stay shoulder to shoulder; a gap between them lets a defender slide through and kill the action
- The dive starts as the ball leaves for the wing, not after it arrives - late and the help defender is already home
- Corner spacing is what opens the lane, so the corner stays wide and deep even though the ball is never coming to them
- Reverse the ball with a crisp pass; a slow reversal gives the defense time to recover from the twist
- Compare the two clips - the second shows how much tighter both screens have to be once there are defenders to shake
