Box Dribble Layups
Develop advanced dribbling skills and finishing with this box dribble drill. Navigate through four cones in a square pattern using crossovers and finishes with a layup. Improves ball handling, change of direction, and finishing at the rim.
Instructions
- 1Set up four cones in a square formation between the ball handler and the hoop
- 2Position the cones so they form a box with one cone near the ball handler and three cones forming a path toward the basket
- 3Start at the first cone (back cone) with the ball
- 4Dribble forward to the cone directly in front of you
- 5Perform a crossover dribble and move to the cone beside you
- 6Dribble back to the cone behind you (next to thestarting position)
- 7Dribble forward again to the cone in front of you
- 8Cross over again to the cone beside you
- 9Perform one final crossover to dribble between the two forward cones
- 10Drive toward the basket and finish with a layup
- 11Retrieve the ball and repeat on the other side
Pro Tips
- Keep the ball low and controlled throughout the drill
- Use your fingertips, not your palm, for better control
- Keep your head up and eyes forward - don't look at the ball
- Make sharp, decisive crossovers at each cone
- Maintain a low stance with bent knees for better balance
- Drive hard to the basket after the final crossover
- Finish strong at the rim with both hands
- Practice both left and right-handed layups
- Increase speed as you become more comfortable with the pattern
- Focus on ball control over speed initially
