Box Inbound

A baseline out-of-bounds set run from a box alignment. The center empties to the wing and loops up top as the safety while the two weak-side players split off each other - one breaking out to the corner, one cutting down into the vacated paint. The inbounder works a fixed four-read progression, and the clip shows it against live defense.

Instructions

  1. 1Line up in a box: two players on the elbows, two on the blocks, and the inbounder out of bounds under the basket
  2. 2On the slap, the center empties out of the ball-side block to the wing, then keeps climbing to the top of the key as the safety valve
  3. 3The weak-side block player comes up the lane line and stacks alongside the weak-side elbow player
  4. 4The two of them split: the block player breaks up and out to the wing and on to the corner, the elbow player cuts straight down into the paint the defense just vacated
  5. 5The other elbow player holds their spot at the elbow, ball side
  6. 6First read is the cutter at the rim - that is the shot the set is built for
  7. 7Second read is the elbow player, who is open if the defense sinks to take away the cut
  8. 8Third read is the shooter in the weak-side corner off the skip pass
  9. 9Fourth read is the center at the top - the safety, taken only if nothing else is there
  10. 10Inbound and follow the pass in for the offensive rebound

Pro Tips

  • The split is the whole play: both players have to break at the same instant, because it is the moment of hesitation that frees the cutter
  • The cutter goes to the front of the rim, not the block - catching it flat on the block gives the help defender time to arrive
  • The center's climb to the top is not a decoy, it is what keeps the defense from loading up the baseline
  • The inbounder counts the reads in order and does not skip ahead; guessing is what turns a BLOB into a turnover
  • Everyone stays wide until the slap - a crowded box lets one defender guard two cuts
  • Five seconds goes fast, so the fourth read should be a pass the center can catch and reset with, not a prayer
  • Run it from both sides in practice; the split works the same whichever block the inbounder is on
