A three-player ball reversal drill built around the swing pass. The player under the basket passes out to a wing, sprints to the top of the key for the return, then swings the ball to the opposite wing and cuts straight to the rim to finish. It trains one specific habit: when you catch at the top of the key, your first look goes to the far side of the floor.
Instructions
- 1Set a player on each wing and start with the ball under the basket
- 2Pass out to the wing on one side and immediately sprint to the top of the key
- 3Receive the return pass at the top of the key, squared up and ready to move the ball
- 4Look to the far side of the floor first and swing the ball to the opposite wing
- 5Cut hard to the rim off your own pass, straight down the middle
- 6The far wing delivers to the cutter, who finishes with a layup
- 7Rotate positions and run it back the other way so the swing goes both directions
Pro Tips
- The look to the far side is the whole point - catch at the top of the key already turned, so the swing is one motion instead of a catch, a scan, and then a pass
- Sprint to the top of the key rather than drifting there; the return pass should be waiting for you, not the other way around
- Meet the return pass at the top of the key instead of floating back behind the arc, or the swing becomes a long, easy pass to jump
- Cut the instant the swing leaves your hands - the defense's eyes follow the ball, and that is the window
- Finish the layup on the move without an extra dribble; the pass should arrive in stride
- Once the pattern is automatic, add a defender at the rim to force a real finishing read
