Diamond and One
A junk defense for shutting down a single dominant scorer. One defender chases that player man-to-man everywhere on the floor while the other four play a 1-2-1 diamond behind them. The top of the diamond takes the ball on the first pass and the two middle defenders move to cover the second-pass options, so the defense stays a pass ahead of the ball instead of chasing it.
Instructions
- 1Assign your best on-ball defender to the opponent's primary scorer and deny them the ball everywhere on the floor
- 2Set the other four in a 1-2-1 diamond behind the chaser: one at the top, two across the middle, one protecting the rim
- 3The top defender goes after the ball on the first pass, closing out to pressure the new ball handler
- 4The two middle defenders slide to cover the second-pass options rather than reacting to where the ball already is
- 5The back defender guards the rim and cleans up on the weak side
- 6Repeat the rotation on every pass - the top chases the ball, the middle two anticipate where it goes next
- 7Call out every screen the chaser has to fight through so the diamond can help without switching
Pro Tips
- The chaser never helps off their assignment - that discipline is the whole point of the defense
- The middle two guard passes, not the ball; both drifting toward the ball is the breakdown that leaves the next pass wide open
- Anticipation is what makes the diamond work - the defender should already be there when the second pass arrives, not closing out after it
- Save it for a team with one dominant scorer and limited shooting around them
- The soft spots are the corners and the short corner, so the middle two have to close out and recover
- Rebounding is the trade-off: assign the back defender and both middle defenders to block out on every shot
- Change into it after a made basket or a timeout - the surprise is worth as much as the alignment
