Pick and Roll
Master the fundamental pick and roll play, one of the most effective two-player actions in basketball. Learn proper screening technique, ball handling, and decision-making.
Instructions
- 1Set up with a ball handler at the top of the key and a screener on the wing
- 2Place two cones to act as defenders - one for the ball handler and one for the screener
- 3Position two pillars in the key to mark the channel where the pass should be made
- 4The screener sets a solid screen on the ball handler's defender (cone)
- 5The ball handler rounds the defender (cone), creating space between himself and the screener
- 6The screener rolls to the basket after setting the screen
- 7The ball handler passes to the screener through the channel marked by the two pillars
- 8Practice both sides of the court and switch roles
Pro Tips
- The screener must set a solid, stationary screen with feet shoulder-width apart
- The ball handler should round the defender tightly to create maximum space
- Creating space between the ball handler and screener is key to opening the passing lane
- Aim your pass through the channel between the two pillars for accuracy
- The screener should roll hard to the basket after setting the screen
- Communication between the ball handler and screener is crucial
- Focus on the timing of the screen and the precision of the pass through the channel
