Screen and Clear
A 3-out, 2-low offensive play that teaches pick and roll execution with proper spacing. The point guard uses a screen from the left wing, while the two bigs clear out to the corners to create space. The point guard has three scoring options: drive to the hoop, hit the rolling wing, or pass to the clearing bigs. This drill emphasizes spacing, decision-making, and reading the defense.
Instructions
- 1Set up in a 3-out, 2-low offensive formation
- 2Position the point guard at the top of the key with the ball
- 3Position the left wing on the left side of the perimeter
- 4Position the right wing on the right side of the perimeter
- 5Position two bigs (post players) down low in the key
- 6The left wing comes up to set a screen for the point guard
- 7The point guard drives around the screen
- 8The left wing rolls to the basket after setting the screen
- 9The right wing fills the spot at the top of the key (vacated by the point guard)
- 10The two bigs down low clear out to the corners to create space
- 11The point guard now has three options:
- 12 Option 1: Drive to the hoop
- 13 Option 2: Pass to the wing that is rolling to the basket
- 14 Option 3: Pass the ball out to one of the bigs that are clearing to the corners
- 15Practice all three options and read the defense to make the best decision
- 16Rotate positions and repeat the drill
Pro Tips
- The left wing must set a solid, stationary screen with proper footwork
- The point guard should drive tightly around the screen to create maximum separation
- The rolling wing should roll hard to the basket - make it a real scoring threat
- The right wing must quickly fill the top of the key to maintain spacing
- The two bigs must clear out immediately to the corners - don't hesitate
- Clearing to the corners prevents crowding in the paint and opens driving lanes
- The point guard should keep their head up to see all three options
- Read the defense - if they help on the drive, pass to the rolling wing
- If the defense collapses, pass to the bigs in the corners
- If the lane is open, drive hard to the hoop
- Communication is key - call out screens and cuts
- Practice the timing of the screen, roll, and clear out
- The rolling wing should present a good target with their hands
- The bigs clearing to the corners should be ready to catch and shoot
- Maintain proper spacing throughout the play
- Work on both left and right side screens for variety
- Focus on making quick, decisive decisions with the ball
