Solo Step Back

Develop the step-back jump shot by simulating coming off a pick. This solo drill teaches players to create separation from defenders and execute a step-back shot after driving toward the basket.

Instructions

  1. 1Start at the top of the key with the ball
  2. 2Dribble the ball to the 3-point line
  3. 3Pretend you're coming off a pick - visualize an imaginary screener and defender
  4. 4Drive toward the hoop as if coming off the pick
  5. 5Make the turn around the imaginary screener and imaginary defender
  6. 6Stop your drive and plant your foot
  7. 7Step back to create separation
  8. 8Take the step-back jump shot
  9. 9Practice on both sides of the court

Pro Tips

  • Visualize the screener and defender to make the drill more realistic
  • Keep your dribble low and controlled during the drive
  • The turn around the imaginary screener should be sharp and decisive
  • Plant your foot firmly before stepping back
  • Create maximum separation with your step back
  • Maintain balance and proper shooting form on the step-back shot
  • Focus on getting your shot off quickly after the step back
  • Practice both left and right-handed drives and step backs
