Stagger Cross

A full-court change-of-direction drill through two staggered columns of cones, built around one detail: attack the outside of each cone so it finishes beside you rather than in front of you, then open back to the middle by stepping backwards around it before you cross. Treating every cone as a defender's outside shoulder is what carries the footwork into a game.

Instructions

  1. 1Set cones in two staggered columns running the length of the floor
  2. 2Start at the baseline and attack the first cone at game speed
  3. 3Take your line at the outside of the cone, not the middle of it, so the cone ends up beside you as you clear it
  4. 4Once you are past it, open back toward the middle by stepping backwards around the cone rather than stepping forward
  5. 5Cross the ball over on that opening step and push off toward the next cone
  6. 6Repeat down the floor, alternating hands at every cone
  7. 7Attack the last cone and finish with a drive to the rim
  8. 8Send the next player once the one ahead clears the second cone

Pro Tips

  • Every cone is a defender's outside shoulder - attacking its outside is the difference between beating a defender and running into their chest
  • The backward step around the cone is the detail most players skip; stepping forward into the change of direction gives a real defender the angle to recover
  • Keep the ball on your outside hip as you attack so the cone is never between you and the ball
  • Cross the ball below the knee - a high crossover is the easiest pass to steal
  • Keep your head up the whole way; the cones are there to be felt, not watched
  • Work both hands equally, and start each set on your weak hand while you are still fresh
  • Once the footwork is clean, swap the crossover for a behind-the-back or hesitation to build a counter off the same attack angle
